Cypress Dome Issue 26
The Cypress Dome is an annual book published by the University of Central Florida's Literary College, filled with stories, poetry and artwork by UCF student.
My cover/interior design was picked in a class-wide competition to represent this year's edition. My cover design was inspired after noticing the intersection of the book's two art forms: visual art and written art.
I found it amusing that visual arts are often praised for having "told a story" while written art can often be described as having "painted a picture." Though these two art forms are so incredibly different, they cross paths regularly and are quite complimentary to one another. Wanting to pay homage to that, I used the text of one of the year's entries to reveal the cypress tree bark texture used throughout the book.
Inside, the book's design is bold, using the cypress bark texture, in introducing each new story, but bare and simplistic from that point forward, allowing the written artistry to shine.
UCF's official typeface, Gotham, was used in bold for the book cover, headers and titles. Complimenting Gotham's strong presence, the equally structured Didot offers a softer but complimentary body typeface.
